The increase amount of food waste generated during the food transfer chain catches more and more attention because of the shortage of food and the improvement of living standard. Sewage sludge the major by-product from the conventional activated sludge process which is widely used to remove organics and nutrients in municipal and industrial wastewater plants. The huge volume and complex composition make sewage sludge the main drawback of the process. Anaerobic digestion is thought to be the most suitable method to treat these two kinds of waste. To improve the digestion efficiency, anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) was proposed. Thermophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (ThAnMBR) combining the advantages of thermophilic anaerobic process and membrane filtration has been used in treating different kinds of sewage. However, this is the first time that ThAnMBR be used in AcoD of food waste and sewage sludge and works successfully. Chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency of 98% with an average methane yield of 0.569 L-CH_4 /g-VS_(added) were achieved at the co-substrate ratio of 75%:25% (food waste : sewage sludge). The methane recovery rate of this feeding condition is 99% and 188% of that of mono-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge.
