Hazardous substances in materials and products and their emissions to air and dust in the indoor environment can lead to human exposure which in turn can contribute to negative health effects. Children are exposed more than adults. Most pre-school age children spend much of their time in day care centers. It is therefore of particular importance to minimize children's exposure by minimizing the load of the hazardous chemicals in the indoor environment of day care centers. One way to affect the occurrence and levels of the hazardous substances is to take measures to eliminate their presence in indoor building materials. In this study, a day care center in Stockholm was evaluated with respect to the levels of hazardous substances before, one month after and one year after renovation that was carried out in accordance with the property owner's environmental management routines, which include chemical requirements for construction products. We report here the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in air as well as the occurrence of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) in air and dust samples. The relevant SVOCs were banned and alternative phthalates, alternative plasticizers and organophosphate esters. We will present the levels found in our study, compare these with relevant international studies and evaluate the effect of the renovation directly after and one year after renovation.
