New Geoscientific Developments at the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) Site

The EGS reservoir at the Utah FORGE site is entirely hosted in fractured Tertiary granitoid that forms the stratigraphic basement in the north Milford valley. These reservoir rocks are part of a pluton exposed throughout the core of the nearby Mineral Mountains. The top of basement is defined by a gentle west-dipping surface that represents a rotated Basin and Range fault. Beneath the FORGE site, 3000 ft of alluvial basin fill covers the plutonic rocks. This report focuses on new results that validate the stratigraphic relationships and the geometry of the basement structure, and the shallow groundwater system. These assessments are based on analysis of drill cuttings and testing of two new seismic monitoring holes (1000' and 3000' deep). Supporting information come from reprocessing and interpretation of 3D seismic data obtained in 2017, and the sampling and analysis of undisturbed groundwater obtained from OH4, a nearby legacy well. The alluvium deposits consist of poorly sorted and poorly lithified sands and gravels made of quartz and feldspar eroded from the plutonic rocks in the Mineral Mountains. These strata strongly resemble fan deposits on the surface and show no evidence of hydrothermal alteration. Aquifer testing proves adequate supply of benign non-potable water that originated as outflow from the Roosevelt Hot Springs. The seismic reflection results support earlier interpretations that the basement contact lacks any major disruptions or discontinuities that might result from offsets on subvertical faults.
