The rating capability of switchgear from circuit breakers for continuous current and fault current interrupting capability determine the power application limitations in every alternating current (AC) power system. This inherent power limitation applies to both AC low voltage (LVAC) and AC medium voltage (MVAC) shipboard electric plants. This paper determines the basis of these limitations via analyses and explains how the design of electric plants for US Navy ships are impacted. This paper concludes with discussion of electric plant design constraints for US Navy ships and recommendations on how to address such constraints to enhance the application of MVAC power systems.
