Investigating the Practical Conditions to Utilize Brick Stair Wall Method as a Supporting Structure in Urban Excavation

One of the functional and economical methods used to support and mitigate the deformations in urban excavations is Brick Stair Wall method. Like any other techniques, this method needs to be proved to be effective and rational. In this study, utilizing the finite difference method program, FLAC, efforts have been made to distinguish environmental conditions in which, this method of support is applicable. In addition, the effect of buildings adjacent to excavation on the surrounding ground is considered using equivalent elastic beam method (EEB). It was found that using this method in some specific conditions is extremely reasonable, especially in urban areas. In terms of excavation depth, this method of supporting performs more effectively in excavations deeper than two meters. The results also showed that the deformations derived from numerical modeling were captured well by well-known empirical formulas to predict settlements next to an excavation.
