This paper deals with the simplified calculation of active and passive component stress of multiphase two-level voltage source inverters with and odd number of phases and single frequency output. Thereby well-known and validated calculation methods from the three-phase case are applied to the multiphase case. The analyzed performance figures include conduction loss and switching loss of the semiconductor switches. Thereby, for the switching energy a second order polynomial dependency on the switched current is assumed. Furthermore, the output quality is addressed by deriving general closed analytical expressions for the harmonic distortion factors (HDFs) of the polygon connections. Results are used to calculate the optimal use of discontinuous and continuous space vector modulation schemes. Last but not least, the capacitor rms current stress is examined.
