Building on the success of the BEng (Hons) Yacht & Powercraft Design degree and the BEng (Hons) Yacht Design & Production degree, Solent University recently launched the MSc Superyacht Design postgraduate degree. The course adds to student's existing knowledge gained from a wide range of technical backgrounds the design skills and practice associated with Superyachts 24-85 metres long. Students develop skills in Naval Architecture, Structural Design, Design Principles, Design Analysis, and Manufacturing Management through experiential learning during the first two semesters. They solve design problems ranging from space planning using MLO requirements through to FEA and CFD analysis of specific areas. Students work alone and in groups replicating industry practice. For the third semester, students complete an industry placement with a Superyacht Design company or build facility where they develop a research-based project based on a requirement of the sponsoring company. This paper gives an overview of the program and outlines examples of the experiential learning gained by the first cohort.
