In this invited "View from Space" commentary on the potential for spaceflight applications of the electromagnetic launcher concept, a specific exemplary concept, publsihed some thirty years earlier, and reprinted here, is held up for a brief retrospective assessment. It is a moon-fixed low-acceleration, highly extended guideway system concept (quite in contrast to alternative so called mass driver concepts). Introduced as Lunatron to reflect both the moon location (advantage: airless body of large diameter), and the prospect of a complete closed guideway encircling the moon which allows for multiple circuits to reach mission-speed and direction, at low acceleration levels (advantage: minimizes payload g's and required power-transfer levels), the "tron" reference as in synchrotron.
