In this sixtieth anniversary of the publication of Shannon’s “A Mathematical Theory of Communications”, this paper presents two relatively recent developments that are based on the fundamentals presented and defined by Shannon. Briefly and simply stated, they are, advanced forms of compression (also referred to as “Sequence Reduction” or “Bit Pollution Reduction”) and “network protection through entropy related monitoring”. Both are based on Information Theory concepts/results originally defined and analyzed by Shannon.
