Ask any conference editor and he'll tell you what a thankless job he has. But secretly he knows he's privileged, because as the papers come in he can survey an entire research field without leaving his desk. This Digest, summarizing the fourth conference in the international infrared-millimeter series, gives the best current survey of our area. The survey becomes especially telling when it is made over the whole conference series. The number of contributed papers has grown remarkably from about 80 at the 1974 Atlanta meeting to about 200 here in Miami. Papers presented this year come from researchers in 16 different countries, carrying on a tradition of broad international coverage started in 1974. The distribution of papers as to research sub-area is noteworthy too. It has changed little since 1974. The largest single area is that of sources, primarily various types of lasers. The second largest area nicely complements the first because it is an application of infrared-millimeter methods; it is solid-state spectroscopy. These two together have accounted for 40 to 55% of each conference's contributed papers. The remaining papers have been spread over about a dozen other identifiable areas with roughly constant percentages but with some significant changes. The 1979 conference shows an increase in papers dealing with infrared-millimeter calibration problems, and a large growth in the area of plasma interactions. The 1980 conference will tell us how the development of these areas continues. The editing of this Digest has been made as easy as possible by the prompt and careful responses of the contributors and it is a pleasure to thank all of you for your efforts.
