Effects of Major Air Pollutants on Millimeter Wave Spectrum

The enormous growth in the number of user devices and increasing data rate requirements is causing spectrum scarcity. The researchers are exploring the use of higher frequency bands such as millimeter wave (mmWave) to achieve spectrum efficiency. The utilization of mmWave for New Radio (NR) application is gaining popularity but it suffers from reduction in signal power due to molecular absorption. Molecules have natural resonant frequencies in the mmWave band resulting in the absorption of energy of the signals. This paper analyses the contribution of major air pollutants in degrading the performance of mmWave links. The proposed model takes into consideration three levels of pollution based on Air Quality Index (AQI) and also demonstrates that particulate matter (PM) causes the highest attenuation to mmWave signals at the frequency of 293.1 GHz. Finally, this work also presents the different telecommunications applications that may be affected when specific pollution level rises.
