Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for low noise targets is a key technique for passive sonar. Beam forming is still the mainly method for passive tracking of underwater-targets. Although the tracking performance of beam forming is relatively stable, it demands for high SNR, and has poor performance while tracking for low noise targets. By applying the focusing matrices to the DOA estimation for low noise targets, the better resolution effects are obtained. The paper has carried on the theoretical analysis and simulation calculation for this method, and has made some verification by using the test data of a low speed underwater vehicle. The test results show that this method has a good prospect for engineering application.
