In the framework of the expansion and modernisation programme of its owned fleet, theGrimaldi Group issued orders for 12 new hybrid cargo vessels called "Grimaldi Green 5thGeneration" (GG_5G), at Asian shipyards, which will be delivered by 2020. They are the firstexamples of a new series of ro/ro hybrid ships, combining the most flexible loading capacityoptions with green technologies, featuring a list of innovative elements underpatent/copyright with the objective of producing “Zero Emission in Port”.The GG_5G will be able to transport over 7,800 linear meters of rolling freight, equivalent toaround 500 trailers. The loading capacity of their garages is double compared to that of thelargest ships currently operated by the Neapolitan Group, and triple compared to the previousgeneration of ro/ro ships. Nevertheless, they entail the same fuel consumption at the samespeed: this means a doubled efficiency measured in consumption per ton transported.The 12 cutting-edge hybrid ro-ro vessels will be equipped with Silverstream® System, themarket leading air lubrication technology for the shipping sector. The Silverstream® Systemoperates by using a rigid carpet of air to reduce the frictional resistance between the hull of avessel and the water, reducing fuel consumption and associated Greenhouse Gas emissionsby 5-10%, depending on vessel characteristics. Silverstream’s air lubrication technology is themost market-mature within the shipping industry, with demonstrable, proven, independentlyand scientifically verified results and a track record of in-operation fuel savings with a rangeof vessel classes. Silverstream will be responsible for designing and supplying the system andwill assist the shipyard during installation and commissioning.Moreover, the vessels will be equipped with mega lithium batteries which will allow them tosatisfy the energy requirements while at berth. These batteries will be recharged duringnavigation, through shaft generators adding the so-called peak shaving system, and with theaid of 600 m2 of solar panels. Thanks to this system, the hybrid vessels guarantee ZeroEmissions in Port.The vessels’ hull will also be covered with special no-toxic silicon paints characterized by lowsurface roughness which will reduce friction with the sea and does not release anysubstances into the water. Furthermore, exhaust gas cleaning systems will reduce sulphurand particulate matter emissions.The GG_5G vessels will also feature a Waste Heat recovery system, which recovers heat fromexhaust gas, allowing the boiler to be turned off in port, as well as LED lightings, pumps andfans complete with variable frequency drives, in order to reduce the electrical load.Many other innovative solutions will be implemented on the new ships, all with the target ofreducing electrical load and fuel consumption. All in all, thanks to this new design, the GG5Gships aim to reduce by 50% the emissions of CO_2 per tonne-km, thus achieving andovercoming well ahead of time the IMO ambition for 2030 of cutting emissions by at least 40%.
