The aim of this study is to examine the existing gender perceptions and to explore its influences on profession choices and planning of female students in their fourth year of college in China. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed in this study. In order to test the existing gender perception, we distributed the survey to college students across the country. Finally, 129 valid questionnaires were collected. The finding shows that females have a relatively stronger sense of gender perception in workplace and society, in addition to family, compared to male counterparts. According to the quantitative results, we then randomly selected 6 respondents to conduct personal interviews to explore their detailed thoughts on gender differences in the workplace and how they will choose their professions. Through both literature review and empirical investigations, we conclude that gender inequality perception in the workplace mainly manifested in the following 4 aspects: 1) proportion disparity in leadership and key positions; 2) payment inequality; 3) certain vocational culture’s segregation and discrimination; 4) unequal treatment in public institution’s authorized strength (Chinese translation: biān zhì, which refers to the establishment of various institutions and their personnel quota, structure and job allocation). With respect to the influencing factors, the personal interest is demonstrated to be regarded as the most important factor when they decide to prepare for their future profession, instead of their gender perceptions in the workplace. At the same time, family-orientated gender perception also plays a key role.
