In February 1992 agreement was reached between the EBU (G/RC) and SMPTE Committees, to recommend the use of Ethernet architecture to extend the capabilities of the ESbus remote-control system for broadcasting equipment as described in EBU standard Tech. 3245. Additionally, standard, or 'industry standard' protocols were defined for the network and transport layers. The mechanism to be presented in the near future to the approvals committees of both organisations, termed ESnet (or ES-Superbus), is intended to supplement, but not replace, the existing 'polled' protocol, and will permit development of the overall control structure into that of a hierarchical network.
