A reliability enhanced version of a compact disc (CD) laser is being used in the optical data links developed for computer applications. Originating from the high volume CD laser products, this 780 nm short wavelength (SW) laser has virtually the same mechanical and electro-optic properties as those used in the CD players. However, significant improvements in reliability have been made such that this laser meets the more stringent lifetime requirements of the computer data link applications than those of consumer products. Results of accelerated aging tests for more than 33 khrs at elevated temperatures show that this SW laser is indeed highly reliable.
