The broad bandwidth of a mode-locked laser pulse can be used to create optical signals of unprecedented time and space complexity. The number of degrees of freedom which can be controlled in a 1-D temporal signal is equal to the ratio of the maximum differential delay encountered by fields transiting the pulse shaper to the size of the minimum temporal feature controlled. This ratio is optimal in reflection holographic pulse shapers.
