Development of a Foundry CAE System on Personal Computers and Its Applications to Large Steel Castings

A foundry CAE system, named as MEScast, which can simulate solidification process and predict potential defects for large steel castings on personal computers in reasonable time, is presented in this paper. MEScast is built as a stand-alone system with built-in geometric modeler, mesh generator, numerical solver, and post-processor. With MS-Windows as support environment, a great amount of elements (1,000,000) can be dealt with, and a user-friendly interface is achieved. This paper mainly introduces the accelerated numerical method, defect evaluation method, and some methods in pre-processing and post-processing. Finally, as examples, simulations of two large castings, a roll-housing and a cylinder block, are discussed.
