An international audience gathered to watch Oil SPill response Limited conduct the first controlled in-situ burn (ISB) in the United Kingdom, in a location 40 miles offshore of Lowestoft, on Une 12, 1996. Two burns were completed using a response-prepared ISB system. The first burn involved fresh crude oil and was iginited with a hand-ield ignitier using a standard gelled fuel mixture. The s econd burn involved an emulsified crude and was lit with a prototpye emulsion breaking igniter depolyed using the Helitorch. The trials were performed with the aim of determining operational practicalities under realistic conditions when responding to a veathered oil situation in an offshore location. The fous of this paper is on the assessment of the two igniter cocepts tested during these trials.
