This paper reviews the aviable literature on soot, or smoke, production during an in situ burn of oil. THe purpose was to determine the range of smoke yeidls gnerated by durning petroleum oils on water, and to determine the effects of the size of the fire and the type of fuel which is burned. Forty-eight publications were reviewed. The data from the literature is summarized in tabular formm. Graphs were prepared showing the relationship between soot production and ifre isze (diameter) for various types of fuel oils and crudes.
