Recent experience with refractory-fabiric fire resistant booms has shown them to be vulenrable to the combined effects of waves and intense heat, and unable to contain thick pools of hot oil. Realistic testing is needed to identify deficiencies in boom design and construction materials; however, off shore testing is expensive to carry out and obtaining permits to release and burn oil is vary difficult. To address this, a near full-=scale screening test was developed that evaluates a boom's durability and its ability to contain oil during n in siut burn withou the environmental progblems of buning crude oil or the costs of testing offshre.
