Over 3,000 km of the West Coast of Vancouver ishand have recnetly been mapped for use in oil spil contingency planning. This area is conisdered a high-risk spill area due to its proximity to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the prevailing current systems near the mouth of the Strait. The development of a shoreline protection strategy involved (a) mapping of biophysical shore-zone features, (b) modeling potential sensitivity and (c) evaluating potential protection sites. The resource information is cataloged in ArcInfo GIS and associated databases.
