Modeling the benzene inhalation hazard from spilled oil

Three different possible models for evalporation of benzene from an oil slick are examined in this paper. Each of these hypothesize a different control mechanism to restrict benzene release from the slick. First is the well-mixed case where the concentration of benzene is presument to be unirom throughout the slick. The evaporation rate is then controlled by an air-liquid mass transfer coefficient and the benzene vapor prressure over the oil. The econd case loods at the diffusion limited circumstance where there deveops a vertical gradient of the benzene concentration in the slick. This is based on the assumption that benaene cannot migrate fast enough throught the oil to reestablishe the uniformity in concentration disrupted by benzene evalporation from the surface. The third case postulates a well-mixed case except for a thin surface crust which suports a steep concentration gradient. The evaporation models, combinaed with an air dispersion model, provide airborne benzene estimates Results are compared with experiments in Mobile Bay.
