Mediterranean Provinces and Seasons in the Sea Surface Pigment and Temperature Fields

The surface pigment and temperature fields of the Mediterranean Sea differentiate between provinces shaped by coastal patterns and plumes, mesoscale features such as permanent eddies, and large-scale structures. The main trends in these provinces highlight the seasonal characteristics of the basin. The assessment of provinces and trends was done using monthly and annual means of pigment concentration and surface temperature from the CZCS(1978-1986) and AVHRR (1982-1991) archives. Following earlier tests of this technique, a classification of combined pigment/temperature images was applied to enhance spatial patterns and guide the analysis of temporal trends. The man provinces include(i) areas under the direct influence of runoff, or coastal interaction processes; (ii) areas of high pigments and low temperatures, in the Liguian, Provencal and Balearic(and Adriatic/Aegean) sub-basins, associated with coastal runoff and vertical mixing, due to the prevailing (Mistral, Bora, and Etesians) winds; (iii) open sea, oligotrophic areas, characterized(in the east) by a permanent mesoscale eddy field.
