Carbon source and antioxidant play decisive roles in developing carbon-containing castables. To tackle the problem caused by flake graphite, such as high water demand, modified flake graphite pellets by extrusion (EG) have been developed. EG pellets in castables effectively improved flowability, mechanical property, pore size distribution, oxidation resistance and thermal shock parameter. A further increase in oxidation resistance of the EG pellets and so of the castables, has been achieved, by incorporating antioxidants and filler oxides. The results show that the new generation of the (EG-A.O.)_(MS) pellets has smaller pore size and higher oxidation resistance, and leads to improved properties of magnesia-silica cement-free castables.
