Bi_2O_3-based cubic solid solutions containing 25% Y_2O_3 undergo transformation to a rhombohedral phase when annealed at temperatures ≤ 650°C. The stability of solid electrolytes in the humid environment is extremely important for practical applications. The rhombohedral phase decomposed to α-monoclinic phase after immersing in water at 70°C for 50 h. Many cracks were found in the decomposed area. These cracks may be caused by the volume change during the decomposition of rhombohedral to a-phase. However, the cubic phase remained unaffected under the same treatment. In the humid environment, the difference in phase stability between cubic and rhombohedral phases is related to the difference in crystal structures. For Y_2O_3-Bi_2O_3 to be used as the solid electrolyte in electrochemical devices, the transformation from cubic to rhombohedral phase needs to be suppressed because the rhombohedral phase will not only lower the conductivity but is also very unstable in a humid environment.
