Laced Reinforced Concrete Construction Technique for Containment Type Structures - An Experimental Study

Reinforced concrete is a widely used material for containment type structures like explosive storage and process buildings. Any accidental explosion inside such a facility will produce high intensity short duration impulsive loads on various structural elements. In such situations the ductility and energy absorption characteristics of various structural elements of the building are of paramount importance. Conventional reinforced concrete is known to have limited ductility and efforts are continually on to improve this property. The paper presents the concept of laced reinforced concrete for resisting high intensity short duration impulsive loads resulting from close in detonation effects. Laced reinforced concrete elements have shown large ductility and concrete confinement capability. The comparative performance of laced reinforced concrete vis-a-vis conventional reinforced concrete has also been described.
