Background/Objectives. Accurate measurement of ambient indoor air quality is essential to determine contaminant inhalation risks in buildings with confirmed soil gas intrusion. The most commonly accepted indoor air sample collection method by state and federal regulators is the use of a Summa canister that collect a 6-liter sample of indoor air over an 8-to 24-hour time period. This sample provides a time weighted measure of air quality over a relatively short time period. This type of measurement does not accurately assess the actual exposure to contaminants in indoor air over a long enough period of time to account for the substantial variations in soil gas intrusion rates common over multiple days and weeks. Due to widely varied fluctuations in concentration measurements, it is difficult for regulators to assess risk posed by vapor intrusion based on samples taken over limited time periods.
