Background/Objectives. The form―the vertical vs. horizontal orientation, the extent, and the aperture―of hydraulic fractures determines their usefulness as remediation tools. Different forms can be created with different methods, but soil characteristics often favor one form over others. Prudent remedial project design exploits these characteristics. In heterogeneous soils, in situ stress still plays an important role but the local contrast of geotechnical properties as well as morphology of the heterogeneity can impact fracture form. For example, glacial till, which all too often is characterized as a homogeneous single unit or perhaps delineated into multiple units by grain size, typically contains pockets or lenses of distinct material (e.g., sand stringers) that extend laterally several meters as well as natural fractures that render a heterogeneous system. The lenses and natural fractures serve to transport fluids, and the resulting weathering over geologic time has established locally unique geotechnical conditions. More recently, these features facilitated the permeation of contaminants, and contaminants can be lodged within the lenses and fractures and within the surrounding matrix. Large sites can be of greater extent than the scale of glacial soil variation and so can encompass soils with widely varying natural characteristics. Successful management depends upon identifying the distribution of soil characteristics.
