Background/Objectives. Enhanced anaerobic biodegradation (EAB) with emulsified and nonemulsified vegetable oils has been implemented at thousands of commercial and military field sites globally. For EAB (i.e. reductive dechlorination) of chlorinated volatile organic contaminants (CVOCs) to proceed, sufficient hydrogen must be generated to meet the stoichiometric demand of target compounds and nontarget species (e.g., competing electron acceptors) in the subsurface. Since nonemulsified vegetable oil blends are not diluted with water, 100% of the product contributes hydrogen to support bioremediation, providing a long-term hydrogen source that can last for years. CAP 18?, a nonemulsified vegetable oil blend, was applied at a former dry cleaner site characterized by elevated levels of CVOCs, relatively high groundwater seepage velocities, and a relatively deep treatment zone consisting of multiple lithological units. Substrate dosages were determined for each lithological unit and amendment delivery was successfully completed using direct-push techniques. The substrate injection provided a cost effective remedial solution resulting in significant contaminant concentration reductions, and contributed to the protection of down gradient receptors.
