Background/Objectives. Changing regulations, cost of energy, and the emergence of recalcitrant compounds like 1,4-dioxane are causing consultants and site owners to consider alternatives to conventional treatment technologies. Synthetic media is one of the technologies that show promise, but perceived to be complex and difficult to manage at field scale. Our paper will discuss recent groundbreaking work designed to define the key conditions controlling media regeneration, eliminating uncertainty in system design and operation. This talk will discuss how different compounds respond to regeneration conditions, share key process design criteria and economics with a focus on 1,4-dioxane regeneration which requires different conditions than more common VOCs.
