In order to predict the mechanical behavior, computer simulation is very useful for the determination of the optimum condition in quenching of a gear, because it is possible to analyze the complicated carburizing-quenching process. This study reports computer predictions of the residual stresses and distortion during the carburizing-quenching process of the gear of carbon steel. The computer simulation is based on the metallo-thermo-mechanical theory and finite element analysis coupled temperature, phase transformation and stress/strain fields. The accuracy of simulation also is verified by the comparison between the experimental data and the simulated result of the distortio. Using the computer prediction, the residual stress field and distortion is presented in the gear model of steel. From the predicted results, improvement of the hardness and strength on surface of the gear due to the carburizing-quenching process can be verified.
