Each year, to commemorate Earth Day, the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (COTE) selects 10 exemplary sustainably designed projects completed over the previous year. The projects are selected for their success in integrating energy and resource efficient strategies into their architectural design. This presentation will highlight the buildings chosen for the 1999 Earth Day Top Ten and demonstrate the diversity of building types, clients and locations which are going green. The presentation will consist of brief case studies of the ten real-life buildings using 35mm slides to describe the exemplary projects. The sustainable techniques and technologies utilized in each building will be described with an emphasis on measurable goals for energy efficiency, resource conservation, and indoor air quality achieved. Two or three of the buildings will be highlighted for more in-depth description of the design process that led to the successful project. These ten projects are exemplary for several reasons. Each is a successful integration of sustainable principles, renewable energy and good design. As a group, they represent a wide range of building types including office buildings, retail, schools, museums and visitor centers. Most interestingly, each demonstrates how the environmental goals of the building are an extension of an organizational or corporate mission.
