Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is expressed in many tumor, stromal and immune cells. Its effects on tumor development are pleiotropic and diverse. It induces the expression of a wide array of products, including cytokines, growth factors and inflammatory mediators that may affect angiogenesis~1. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) is a natural 22-kDa inhibitor of IL-1 and can modulate the effects of IL-1. It binds to IL-1 receptors on various target cells with an affinity nearly equal to that of IL-1 withut inducing any biological responses. IL-lRa given in doses up to 100-fold in excess of IL-1, decreased the effects of IL-1~2.
