Current transfection protocols rely almost exclusively on the use of viral vectors or non-viral DNA formulations based on liposomal or polymeric carrier substrates. While there are numerous vecotr-specific concerns about the use of viruses for gene transfer, the existing non-viral systems generally suffer from low activity and frequent toxicity.
