Two developments are reported. First, a three-dimensional boundary detection technique for sets of overlapping spheres is described. It finds the exact boundary in the sense that if a physical model of the overlapping spheres is constructed, it would look exactly like the numerical construction. This is of critical importance to moving-least-squares enhancements of smooth-particle hydrodynamics requiring explicit boundary value treatments, but would be of use for any meshfree technique. Secondly, a new numerical integration technique involving only data at the MLS nodes is described. It differs from traditional nodal quadrature technique in that the geometrical volume is replaced by certain sums of the MLS correction factors and weights. Numerical examples demonstrate that the method correctly accounts for the overlap of weight functions, and converges to the correct value.
