One way of looking at finite element analysis is that we replace the original load p by a work equivalent load p{sub}h. This interpretation allows for an easy explanation why we have global equilibrium in a finite element analysis but no local equilibrium. We can also show that each nodal value or value at a Gauss point is the L{sub}2-scalar product of the finite element approximation of the corresponding Green function (G{sub}i){sup}h and the load p and that the quality of a mesh depends on the quality of the approximated Green functions. In particular it becomes evident why integrated stresses are more stable than values at single points.
