This paper describes the benchmark problem for the special session entitled 'Computational Predictability of Natural Convection Flows in Enclosures' to be held at the First MIT Conference on Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics. The primary objectives for this special session are to: (1) identify the correct time-dependent solution for the 8:1 differentially-heated cavity with Ra = 3.4 × 10{sup}5 and Pr = 0.71, (2) determine the critical Rayleigh number for the 8:1 cavity above which the flow is unsteady, and (3) identify which methods can reliably provide these results. The following sections define the benchmark problem and the associated compulsory data.
