The vertical and temporal variation of hydrodynamics and turbulence in symmetrically oscillatory wave boundary layer flows may be predicted satisfactorily by computationally solving a simplified mathematical model. This model may be extended to include the suspension of sediment due to shallow-water wave-generated turbulence, as well as the transportation of suspended sediments due to wave action. The ability to qualify and quantify nearshore mixing and sedimentary processes could greatly enhance our understanding of complex coastal problems, such as beach erosion or harbour siltation, and therefore contribute to effective planning and managing of coastal development and remediation efforts.
