We discuss the construction and implementation of two numerical schemes for the simulation of unsteady reacting flow with detailed kinetics. Both schemes use a semi-implicit time stepping procedure which incorporates an implicit ODE integrator for the stiff reaction source terms. The first scheme relies on an additive, non-split approach that combines implicit integration of the reaction source terms with a second-order predictor-corrector treatment of advection and diffusion. The second scheme relies on a Strang-type operator-split formulation, in which the implicit integration of reaction source terms is combined with an explicit fractional step update of the diffusion source terms. The performance of the schemes is discussed in light of 1D convergence tests as well as large-scale unsteady 2D computations using a detailed C{sub}1C{sub}2 methane-air mechanism.
