Lock-in prediction for bridge decks using a Discrete Vortex Method

Wind-induced vibrations caused by the alternating forces from the shedding of vortices have been encountered with several long-span bridges in the past. Numerical simulations of this response phenomenon have to date been barely successful, which may be attributed to the complex flow processes involved in the synchronisation between the vortex shedding and the oscillation of the structure. An incompressible two-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver based on the Discrete Vortex Method is introduced and coupled with a suitable structural dynamics time-marching scheme. Fluid-structure interaction analyses on the Storeboelt Bridge deck are performed, yielding information on the properties of the lock-in region. Furthermore, an extension of the method to the third dimension is proposed.
