Parallel adaptive application development using the SIERRA framework

This paper presents a fully distributed parallel h-adaptive application developed in the SIERRA framework. SIERRA is a computational framework developed at Sandia National Laboratories, and provides a set of 'services' including parallel unstructured mesh refinement and unrefinement. A number of sophisticated mechanics application codes have been developed thus far in SIERRA. One such application is Calore, a nonlinear transient thermal analysis code including chemistry and enclosure radiation. We describe the simple procedure, making use of the SIERRA services, by which parallel adaptivity has been developed in Calore, and present results of an adaptive simulation of a silicon wafer being heated by a moving electron beam.
