This paper contains results from a continuing study of the use of fast ships in the transport economy. We have been examining a variety of concepts involving the use of recently-built or -designed fast ships as large passenger-car ferries or freighters. (1) We address the issues of transport economy using a total-cost concept which takes into account the trade-offs between speed and fare and between speed and freight level of fast ships and competitive vehicles, including conventional ferries or freighters. (2) We have examined factors involved in transport efficiency, such as P/WV, P/W_pV, and W_p/Wd (P=power; W=weight; V=speed; W_p =payload; W_d =deadweight), for several fast passenger-car ferries and fast freighters. We have found that twin-hull ships are slightly superior to mono-hull ships, in terms of transport efficiency. One of the reasons for this is that the deck area of twin-hull ships is greater than that of mono-hull ships. (3) Direct operating costs and transport efficiency (using the values P/WV or P/W_pV) were estimated for selected fast ships, and these two factors were found to follow similar patterns. (4) Feasibility studies have been performed for the operation of fast ships on ferry routes along Japan's coastal seaways. We have found that, as passenger-car ferries, fast ferries are able to compete with conventional ferries as well as other transportation systems such as land transports and air transports. (5) We have also conducted feasibility studies for the operation of fast freighters on ASEAN trade routes. In this case, however, fast freighters were not found to be competitive with conventional container ships, due to their high operating costs, although they were found to be competitive with air freighters.
