In order to promote PV integration in buildings new specially designed solar cell modules have to be developed, which can fulfil the special needs of architects for certain applications. Several new solar cells have been presented so far, for example the semitransparent amorphous silicon solar cell from ASE, or coloured solar cells from various kind of silicon solar cell suppliers. Semitransparent modules can be directly integrated in facades as shading elements or in light roofs where coloured solar cells can provide new designs on the coverage of a building or can easily be integrated in a coloured building or roof. In 1993 the POWER solar cell concept was presented for the first time [1]. Already since June 1999 the POWER solar cell is produced at the production facility at Konstanz by the sunways corporation and is now available on the PV market. The contribution will show the advantages of the POWER solar cell for various applications especially when integrated in buildings. Several applications of the POWER solar cell integrated in buildings using, first realised projects and light simulations of inner rooms for several typical examples will be presented. The simulations will give a better insight of the optical impression in applications where the POWER solar cell is integrated in glass areas of the building. The optical impression of the POWER modules will be compared to modules where standard solar cells are used. The synergetic effects will be shown for the various applications and the results of optical as well as the thermal properties of POWER solar cell modules will be discussed for three different types of glasses.
