The web coating process started in the mid 1800's as a simple low speed process, which was originally used to produce a few coated basic products, coated paper, coated textiles and photographic film. Subsequently, over the next 160 years, there have been many technological advances which has transformed web coating into a high speed, low cost, versatile, process which currently produces a wide variety of single and multilayer products, such as thin film batteries, color film, adhesive tapes, packaging products, medical delivery systems and information storage media. Even though web coating is an old process, new technology developments will continue to significantly improve the quality, cost and performance is expected to continue so that new versatile products can be produced. From 1800 to 2007, there have been many significant technology advances that have continually upgraded the performance of the web coating line. This ahs resulted in a wide range of product structures being manufactured at low cost and with excellent quality. This progress can be characterized by the following developmental stages: ?Initial development 1800-1900; New coating applicator 1900-1970; Advanced technology development 1970-1995; Fundamental mechanisms 1980- present; Current technologies 1995- present; Future advances.
