Over 50 years ago Jules Hermes started a business dyeing polyester fiber and eventually polyester film. This paper will trace a brief history of the original work and how it developed into today's multiple processes and go on to discuss the markets and technologies presently being served by these processes. Future opportunities for dyed film will be discussed for markets such as Solar Control, Brand Protection, Architectural Lighting, Electronic Displays and other areas where manipulation of light can be exploited to specific advantages.
