Heated rollersare used for many purposes in the Converting Industry: laminating, embossing, and film orienting just to name a few. Two technologies have been dominant for many years, rollers that are heated by hot oil or by steam. Hot oil is used primarily in the Converting Industry and steam in the Paper Making Industry. In the past couple of decades, other heated roller technologies have become available. Rollers heated by hot water are generally used for processes below 300 F. The rollers and heating systems are otherwise similar to hot oil systems. Rollers that are heated electrically either use induction heating coils or various types of resistance heaters to heat the internal areas of the roller core. All heated rollers are heated internally with only a couple of exceptions. One unique electrically heated roller, by American Roller, uses ceramic layers located on the outer roller surface as the resistance heating element. Unlike internally heated rollers, this type has zero temperature setpoint overshoot. There are a few induction heated rollers around that have stationary induction coils mounted external to the roller.
