This project involved the removal of the top of an old water supply reservoir tank for the City of Lead, SD by explosives. The general contract called for the removal of the concrete top without damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. The option of a rock hammer was eliminated, due to the possibility of an unpredictable collapse damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. Different blasting options were discussed between the primary contractor and the blasting contractor, along with the pros and cons of each. The primary contractor settled on the option of drilling the structure for blasting versus using shaped charges. The initial recommended pattern of 2 ft by 2 ft (0.61 m by 0.61 m) was not cost effective, due to the number of holes needed (2,250 holes), and it was decided to conduct a series of test shots on a 3 ft by 3 ft (0.91 m by 0.91 m) pattern. The load for the first test shot was a single charge of 0.125 lb (0.11 kg) at a depth of 7 in (17.78 cm). The load for the second test shot was a single charge of 0.25 lb (0.06 kg) at a depth of 9 in (22.86 cm), and the load for the third and last test shot was 0.125 lb (0.06 kg) at a depth of 10 in (25.4 cm) with a second charge of 0.125 lb (0.06 kg) at a depth of 6 in (15.24 cm). This paper discusses the test blasting that was conducted to determine the proper pattern size and explosive load to use for the project, the procedures implemented to control noise and any flyrock, and the final results of the tank lid demolition.
