Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?" It could be the anthem of the twenty-first-century knowledge worker, but it was penned by T. S. Eliot nearly 70 years ago. In truth, the combined forces of globalization, deregulation and low capital costs have had a steady impact on the growth of information supply. To those forces add the Internet, and what began as a refreshing stream of options and opportunities has become a tidal wave that threatens to drown a generation of business librarians in a massive surge of bits and bytes. More new information has been produced within the last three decades than in the past five millennia. In the office, this is most evident as we are inundated by voice mail, e-mail and fax ... pagers and calendars ... meetings, video conferences, memos and manuals ... data from Web pages, corporate intranets, chat rooms, listservs and newsgroups. And the Web alone is said to be growing 7 million pages each day. That means that, today, there may well be nearly 5 billion pages on the Web.
