The decomposition rate of ammonium nitrate (AN) catalyzed by chlorine ion in acidic solution is studied by the method of measuring N{sub}2O gas produced. A rate equation and a mechanism for describing the reaction are presented. The kinetic parameters (the apparent activation energy and pre-exponential constant) of the decomposition reaction are estimated. Information is obtained on the relationship between the decomposition rate and the concentration of AN, HNO{sub}3 and Cl{sup}-.
